P0014 — B -Camshaft Position (Bank 1) Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance

🔧 DTC: P0014 — “B” Camshaft Position (Bank 1) Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance

🚘 Meaning:

This code indicates that the exhaust camshaft (Camshaft “B”) on Bank 1 is more advanced than the ECM expects.
In short: the cam timing is too far ahead of where it should be.

🔍 Common Causes:

1. Engine Oil Problems

Dirty, thick, or low oil level (VVT needs clean oil pressure)

Incorrect oil viscosity

2. VVT (Variable Valve Timing) / OCV (Oil Control Valve) Issues

Stuck or clogged VVT solenoid

Faulty OCV actuator

Dirty oil passages to the actuator

3. Timing Chain / Belt Problems

Chain stretched

Timing jumped one tooth

Worn or faulty timing chain tensioner

4. Camshaft Phaser (Actuator) Fault

Phaser stuck in advanced position

5. ECM or Wiring

Faulty wiring or connection to the camshaft actuator or sensor

Poor ground or corroded connector

In rare cases, ECM malfunction

🧰 Diagnostic Steps:

1. Check Engine Oil

Verify correct level, cleanliness, and viscosity.

Replace if dirty or overdue.

2. Visual Inspection

Inspect wiring and connectors to the camshaft actuator and cam sensor.

3. Test VVT Solenoid (OCV)

Apply 12V directly to the solenoid — listen for a click.

Check for debris or sludge inside the oil control valve.

Clean or replace if sluggish.

4. Scan Live Data (if available)

Observe camshaft advance angle and desired vs actual timing.

If the actual is significantly more advanced — the actuator may be stuck.

5. Inspect Timing Chain

If the above checks are okay but code persists, verify timing marks.

6. Clear Code & Retest

After any repair, clear the code and drive-test to confirm fix.

🧩 Common Fixes:

Change engine oil & filter

Clean or replace VVT (OCV) solenoid

Clean oil passages

Replace camshaft actuator (phaser)

Repair stretched or mis-timed chain

Repair wiring/connectors to VVT circuit

⚙️ Example Case (Common in Workshops):

Vehicle: Hyundai / Kia 1.6-2.0 GDI or Chevrolet Cruze

Cause: Dirty oil or clogged OCV filter screen

Fix: Clean/replace OCV, oil flush, new oil + filter — code clears immediately.
