P0024 – B Camshaft position ( Bank 2 ) timing over – advanced/system performance

P0024 – “B” Camshaft Position (Bank 2) Timing Over-Advanced / System Performance.

✅ P0024 – Meaning

P0024 indicates that the exhaust camshaft (Camshaft B) on Bank 2 is more advanced than the ECM expects.

Bank 2 = the side of the engine without cylinder 1

Camshaft “B” = Exhaust camshaft

✅ Common Symptoms

Rough idle

Low power

Hard starting

Increased fuel consumption

Engine noise (rattle) during startup

MIL/Check Engine light ON

✅ Most Common Causes

1. Low or Dirty Engine Oil (VERY common)

Low level or thick/dirty oil affects VVT system.

2. Faulty VVT Solenoid (OCV) – Exhaust Side (Bank 2)

Stuck open → cam stays advanced.

3. Jammed VVT Cam Phaser (Exhaust, Bank 2)

Mechanical advance stuck.

4. Timing Chain / Belt Issues

Chain stretched

Wrong timing after engine repair

Worn tensioner

5. Wiring / Connector Faults

OCV connector loose

Broken wire

Oil contamination inside connector

6. ECM command vs. cam sensor reading mismatch

Faulty camshaft sensor (Bank 2 exhaust)

✅ Quick Diagnosis Steps (Mechanic-Level)

Step 1 — Check Engine Oil

Level correct?

Oil clean?

Use correct grade? ➡️ If low/dirty → change oil & filter and recheck.

Step 2 — Test the Exhaust VVT Solenoid (Bank 2)

Remove and clean solenoid (OCV)

Check:

Resistance (typically 6–14 ohms depending on vehicle)

If it is sticking due to sludge

Check oil screen filters (if present)

➡️ Replace if solenoid is sticking or electrically out of spec.

Step 3 — Check Cam Phaser (VVT Actuator)

Signs of stuck advanced:

Rattle at startup

Cam angle not returning to “0°” at idle

Live data shows high advance at idle

➡️ If stuck → Replace cam phaser.

Step 4 — Timing Chain Check

Use scan tool or manual alignment:

Compare “desired” vs “actual” exhaust cam angle

If difference is large → chain stretched OR timing off

Step 5 — Wiring & Connector Inspection

Check continuity from ECM → OCV

Check ground & power supply

Look for oil contamination in connectors

Step 6 — Cam Sensor Check (Bank 2 Exhaust)

Faulty sensor can cause incorrect cam position readings.

✅ Most Common Fixes (Real-World Workshop Experience)

✔ Oil & filter change (many cases solved)
✔ Replace Bank 2 Exhaust VVT Solenoid
✔ Clean/replace OCV oil filter screen
✔ Replace Exhaust Cam Phaser (if stuck)
✔ Fix stretched timing chain
✔ Repair/replace damaged wiring
