P009B00 – Fuel Pressure Relief Control Circuit/Open

This code indicates the fuel pressure relief valve (FPRV) or fuel pressure regulator/relief solenoid control circuit has an open circuit.
Common on diesel engines (CRDI, Duramax, Cummins, Ford TDCi, Mahindra mHawk, etc.) and some petrol GDI systems.

🔧 Possible Causes

Electrical / Wiring (MOST COMMON)

Open circuit in FPRV control wire

Broken wire near engine harness or fuel rail

Loose, corroded, or pushed-back pin at the connector

Blown fuse supplying the FPRV

Bad ground connection

Component Faults

Failed fuel pressure relief valve / control solenoid

Internal coil open (infinite resistance)

ECM/PCM Issues

Driver circuit fault (rare)

Water intrusion in ECM plugs

🔍 Symptoms

Hard starting / no start

Low rail pressure or unstable pressure

Limp mode

Fuel pressure drops under load

Sometimes engine stalls

🧰 Step-by-Step Diagnosis (Workshop Method)

1️⃣ Visual Inspection

Inspect fuel rail pressure relief valve connector

Look for:

Cut wires

Oil contamination

Damaged insulation

Loose connector pins

Check grounds near engine block and fuel rail.

👉 50% of cases are simply wiring damage.

2️⃣ Check FPRV Connector Voltage

Using a multimeter:

Key ON

One pin should have battery voltage (10.5–14V) or 5V, depending on manufacturer.

Other pin goes to ECM ground-controlled driver.

If no voltage:
➡️ Check fuse → fuel injection power supply
➡️ Check for open in power feed wire.

3️⃣ Coil Resistance Test (FPRV Solenoid)

Unplug the valve and measure its resistance.

Typical values:

Petrol GDI relief valve: 1–5 Ω

Diesel CRDI relief valve: 3–12 Ω

If OL (infinite ohms):
❌ Valve internally open
➡️ Replace the fuel pressure relief valve

4️⃣ Check Continuity from FPRV to ECM

Set multimeter to continuity mode:

Check FPRV signal wire → ECM pin

Check FPRV ground/return → ECM pin

If “no continuity” → open circuit in harness
➡️ Repair/replace wiring.

Look especially near:

Injector harness

Fuel rail

Engine vibration points

EGR pipe area (heat damage)

5️⃣ Actuator Test (If Scanner Supports It)

Use scan tool → “Fuel Pressure Relief Valve Test”

Command it ON/OFF

Observe rail pressure change

If no response → valve faulty / wiring open.

6️⃣ Check Rail Pressure During Cranking

If rail pressure doesn’t build (diesel):

260–300 bar minimum required for start

If pressure stuck low → valve stuck open or circuit open

🛠 Common Fixes

Repair broken wires near FPRV plug

Replace corroded/pushed connector pins

Replace failed fuel pressure relief valve

Repair/replace power supply wire or blown fuse

Fix ECM ground

Replace ECM only after confirming all wiring & valve are good

⭐ Quick Troubleshooting Tips for Your Workshop

Most common failure: broken wire at the fuel rail connector

If resistance is infinite → replace valve immediately

If voltage missing → check injector power circuit fuse

If all tests OK but code returns → suspect ECM driver.
