DTC P0071 – Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance.

✅ DTC P0071 – Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor sends outside air temperature data to the ECU.
P0071 sets when the sensor signal is not believable (too slow to change, unrealistic, stuck, or erratic).

🔧 Common Causes

Sensor-related

Faulty AAT sensor (open/short internally)

Sensor contaminated with dirt, corrosion, moisture

Wiring / connector issues

Open circuit in signal or ground wire

Short to power or short to ground

Loose connector / corroded terminals

Rodent damage near front bumper area (very common)

Other causes

Sensor not mounted properly → not getting actual airflow

After front bumper repair → sensor left hanging inside engine bay

Faulty ECU (rare)

📌 Symptoms

AC cooling performance issues

Wrong temperature displayed on dashboard

Automatic climate control acting strange

No driveability issue in most cars

🛠️ Step-by-Step Diagnostic Procedure

1. Visual Inspection

Check:

Sensor location (usually front bumper / grille)

Cracked sensor body

Loose connector

Corroded pins

Wires damaged near bumper

👉 If sensor is hanging inside engine bay instead of outside, P0071 will trigger.

2. Check Live Data

Use scan tool:

Compare Ambient Air Temp reading with actual temperature

Should be within ±3–5°C

If reading is:

–40°C → Open circuit

+130°C or more → Short to ground / power

Stuck reading → Sensor stuck / wiring issue

3. Sensor Resistance Test (if 2-wire NTC sensor)

Typical Ambient Air Temp sensors are NTC thermistors.

Approximate values:

20°C → 2–3 kΩ

0°C → 5–7 kΩ

40°C → 1–1.5 kΩ

If resistance is:

Infinite (OL) → Open sensor

Near 0 Ω → Shorted sensor

4. Wiring Test

With connector unplugged:

Check 5V reference or signal wire (varies by car)

Check good ground

Perform wiggle-test → see if reading fluctuates.

5. Replace Sensor If Needed

If wiring good and values incorrect → replace the AAT sensor.
These sensors are cheap and easy to replace.

Clear codes and verify reading.

🔧 Quick Fix Summary

Problem Fix

Stuck or incorrect temperature reading Replace AAT sensor
Open circuit (–40°C) Repair wire / connector
Short circuit (130°C+) Repair insulation / ground short
Sensor not placed properly Reinstall to bumper grille
