DTC P0097 – Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2 Circuit Low.
DTC P0097 — Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2 Circuit Low.
✅ DTC P0097 Meaning
P0097 = Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low (Bank 1)
The PCM detects voltage lower than expected from the IAT2 sensor.
This usually means the sensor circuit is shorted to ground, or the sensor is faulty.
IAT2 is usually located:
In charge air cooler outlet (turbo engines)
Inside MAF sensor housing (some cars)
On intake manifold (NA engines)
🔧 Common Symptoms
Low engine power
Poor fuel economy
Hard cold start
High fuel trim (rich)
MIL ON
Sometimes turbo under-boost on forced-induction engines
🔥 Most Common Causes
1. IAT Sensor 2 wiring harness damage (MOST COMMON)
Wire rubbed through
Short to ground
Corrosion
2. Bad Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2
Internal short
Sensor resistance stuck low
3. Bad MAF Sensor (if IAT2 integrated)
Some models combine IAT + MAF.
4. Connector issues
Loose pins
Water intrusion
5. PCM internal fault (RARE)
🧰 Step-by-Step Diagnostic Procedure
1. Visual Check
Inspect wiring from IAT2 to harness
Look for:
Broken insulation
Oil contamination
Water in connector
Loose or bent pins
✅ If damage found → repair wiring, clear code, test drive.
2. Check Sensor Connector Voltage
With ignition ON:
Pin readings:
5V reference (usually 4.5–5V)
Ground (0V)
Signal wire (should be 2–4V depending on temperature)
❗ If signal voltage is 0V
→ Short to ground in signal wire
→ Repair wiring
❗ If signal is 5V fixed
→ Open circuit
→ Check sensor resistance or broken wire
3. Test the Sensor Resistance (IAT2)
Remove sensor → measure across the two pins.
Approx typical values:
20°C → 2.5kΩ
40°C → ~1kΩ
80°C → 300–400Ω
❗ If the resistance is extremely low (0–100Ω)
→ Sensor SHORTED → Replace IAT sensor.
❗ If sensor reads infinite (OL)
→ Open circuit → Replace sensor.
4. Wiggle Test
Engine running:
Move the harness and connector.
If readings jump → wiring fault.
5. Check Live Data (IAT2 Temp)
Scan tool → IAT2 temperature.
Signs of fault:
Reading below −40°C
Stuck value (not changing)
Sudden drop to minimum temp
If live data normal after sensor replacement → problem resolved.
🛠 Common Fixes
💥 Repair damaged IAT2 wiring
💥 Replace Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2
💥 Clean connector terminals
💥 Replace MAF sensor (if IAT integrated & fault persists)
💥 Rarely: PCM reprogram or replacemet
